Student Wellbeing
Nurturing the Whole Child
Building Personal and Social Capability
In the NSW Curriculum, students develop personal and social capability as they learn to understand themselves and others, manage relationships, and navigate life’s challenges. This includes learning to:
- recognise and regulate emotions
- develop empathy and understanding
- build and maintain positive relationships
- make responsible decisions
- work effectively in teams
- handle challenges constructively
- develop leadership skills
- conflict resolution through restorative conversations.
These important life skills are taught through Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), which helps students build self-awareness, self-control, and interpersonal skills that contribute to success at school and beyond.
The Zones of Regulation
At Kensington Public School, we use The Zones of Regulation, a framework that helps students recognise and manage their emotions. The program uses four colour zones to help children identify how they’re feeling, understand their emotional state, and choose appropriate strategies to regulate their behaviour. Through this program, students learn to:
- read facial expressions and body language
- solve problems effectively
- recognise personal triggers
- reflect on how their actions affect others
By teaching the Zones of Regulation across the school, we aim to build a shared language around emotions and encourage open discussions about mental health and wellbeing.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
Our wellbeing programs are underpinned by Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), an evidence-based, whole-school approach that supports every student’s academic and social success. PBL helps us to:
- promote positive social behaviours and respectful relationships
- address diverse student needs
- establish consistent expectations across settings
- engage students, parents, and staff in a team approach
This framework ensures a consistent, supportive environment where all students can flourish.
Our Core Values: Honour, Knowledge, and Community
All members of the Kensington Public School community are guided by our three core values:
Honour, Knowledge, Community
These values were developed in consultation with our school community and form the foundation for behaviour expectations in all settings, from classrooms and playgrounds to the library and canteen. They are explicitly taught at the start of each year and revisited regularly to maintain a shared understanding and reinforce positive behaviour.
How We Support Student Wellbeing
Our approach to student wellbeing is student-centred, supportive, and developmental, fostering academic, emotional, social, and physical growth. We believe a caring and collaborative school community is fundamental to success, and our staff work closely with students and families to promote positive engagement and belonging. Supporting each student’s mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing is part of everyday school life.
We do this through:
- teachers who help students feel welcome and included
- access to school psychologists and specialist staff
- evidence-based programs and professional learning that support health, social skills, attendance and positive behaviour
- help for students who are new or changing year levels
- clear expectations for behaviour and respectful relationships
- staff who get to know each child and work closely with families
- developing health care plans for students
- open communication about wellbeing and support.
