Additional Learning Support
At our school, our teachers pay close attention to your child and their learning needs providing an inclusive learning environment. Every student deserves the chance to succeed and we are committed to ensuring every student is ready to learn and thrive in all areas of school life. We support students with diverse learning needs including those with a disability, additional learning needs and students who require extension. We identify when support may be needed by monitoring student progress, reviewing assessment data, and listening to concerns from parents and carers and external providers. A formal diagnosis is not required for a child to receive support in a mainstream class, and assistance can begin at any stage of school. Our learning support program provides small, targeted support groups with a particular focus on English and mathematics. These groups are led by our learning support staff with the assistance of our School Learning Support Officers (SLSOs). The team meets fortnightly to monitor student progress and develop tailored intervention or extension plans to best support each learner.
Support That Fits Your Child's Needs
At Kensington Public School , we know that some students need extra support to feel confident and do their best at school. We work closely with families, teachers, and support staff to put the right plans and adjustments in place for each child.
Support may include:
- strong collaboration with families and external providers to monitor student progress and set achievable goals
- small intervention groups in literacy and numeracy
- specialist help for students learning English as an additional language or dialect (EAL/D)
- extension programs and learning pathways for high potential and gifted students
- accessible classrooms, assistive technology, or adapted resources
- extra guidance from teaching staff including the provision of adjusted content and resources
- adjustments to assessments, such as extra time, breaks, or access to alternative formats.
Our learning support groups are flexible and designed to meet students’ changing needs. Children may move in and out of groups depending on their progress. Groups may focus on reaching key learning goals, providing targeted support over a term or semester, or extending learning in areas such as English and mathematics.
For students who require individual support, we develop Personalised Learning and Support Plans in collaboration with families, teachers, support staff and external professionals. These plans set clear goals and strategies to help every child succeed. They are reviewed regularly and updated in response to student needs.
